On Friday night, ten days before Christmas, I was at Kohl’s finishing up my Christmas shopping. I was determined to have all my gifts purchased and wrapped a week early. Everyone else must have had the same idea, because Kohls was packed. The checkout line was very long, and I had to lean over my cart a couple of times because I was in pain. I chalked it up to 3rd trimester discomfort, after all I had just turned 37 weeks and I didn’t think I was having “real” contractions… I assumed it was false labor. On Saturday, the “false labor” continued. That weekend I sang with the choir in our church’s Christmas concert. During the concert, whenever we would sing a big note – I had a contraction! I started joking that I was going to go into labor from singing, but I did not actually believe it. When the concert was over, I told my friends I felt like it was close, but I still assumed I had about a week. That night, I timed the contractions for a while and they were 6-8 minutes apart. Because they didn’t hurt badly enough, I stopped timing them after an hour and went to bed. The next morning I felt very nauseous. I still went to church and sang with the choir for the second performance of the Christmas concert. Again, the big notes triggered contractions! Afterward I told my husband I wasn’t up for visiting with family, I just wanted to go home and sleep. And sleep is what I did — I ended up sleeping until 5pm! I woke up, still feeling nauseous and told my little boy we were having cereal for dinner. That is all I could stomach. I told my husband to go to our friends’ Christmas party without me and I stayed home with Micah. At ten to six, I got up from the table and started cleaning up our bowls. All of a sudden, I realized I was leaking. My water broke!! I had to call my husband to tell him to come back home, and he was shocked!
8 1/2 hours later, in total disbelief and awe, I was holding my tiny Matthew in my arms. He was so perfect. It was 2:35 in the morning on Monday, December 17th. Almost 3 weeks early… He just couldn’t miss Christmas!
Here he is with his proud big brother at 5 days old:
And this morning I captured wide open eyes, kissy lips and big smiles. He is 3 weeks and 2 days old. Time is flying by and I can’t believe how fast he is growing. I just moved him up to size 1 diapers yesterday because the newborn sized diapers weren’t fitting around his chunky little thighs anymore. I just love this little man!
